The central work, News piece, coveres the gallery floor with daily newspapers collected on the eve and day of the opening — a ritual placing that became a meditative confrontation with the overwhelming nature of news media. As visitors moved through the space, their presence inevitably altered the field: some moved slowly and consciously, others acted as disruptors, kicking up and tearing apart the placed papers. Daily traffic created ruptures and swells; I returned routinely to repair them, placing newly delivered newspapers over the gaps in a futile gesture that references the conditioned labor we perform to maintain the appearance of progressive time. Over the course of the exhibition, the flat field collapsed into piles — accumulations that destabilized linear time into an ever-changing present. The installation exists only in relationship to the bodies that encounter it, implicating each visitor in the ongoing process of forming and reforming what we receive as record, as fact, as history.
